Adding Definition to a Room with Wallpaper Borders

Wallpaper borders provide homeowners with a quick and relatively inexpensive way to add definition and visual interest to a room. They come in a variety of colors, patterns and sizes and can be found to match almost any decor. Wallpaper borders usually come pre-pasted and ready to hang, making installation quick and simple. With careful placement and pre-planning, adding definition to a room with wallpaper borders is easy to do.

High Borders

Hanging a wallpaper border at the top of the wall by the ceiling juncture makes the eye travel up and around the room. Borders placed at this height visually lengthen the room's walls making the ceilings appear higher. Opting for more formal border patterns will change the tone of the room and make it look and feel more sophisticated. A cheerful or whimsical border placed at the top of the wall creates the completely opposite effect. It lightens the mood and brightens the space. Choose a border pattern that will accurately attest to the feel that is being sought.

Chair Rail Borders

Wallpaper borders that are hung at a chair rail height around a room create a different feel than those hung at the top of the wall. They are slightly less formal and tend to shorten tall ceilings by drawing the eye down to a chair rail height. Wallpaper borders at this height tend to define the sections of the wall into top and bottom. The wall space above the border is more of a focal point than the wall space below the border. The eye naturally travels around the room at the border's height and then drifts up. For short walls, a chair rail border may shorten the walls too much, so opt for higher wallpaper borders instead.

Patterns

Wallpaper borders come in many different patterns for each room of the house. There are the cute and whimsical nursery borders that feature jungle animals, cars and trucks, or farmyard creatures that are too cute to look away from. For the kitchen, there are wallpaper borders with bright, yellow lemons and checkered red and white patterns. Bathrooms have the option of borders with cute rubber ducks or more sophisticated geometric designs. Living rooms and family rooms can opt for wallpaper borders with Western scenes or a French fleur de lis pattern. Whichever room is being decorated, there are wallpaper borders that will provide instant accents and definition to the room. Choose a pattern or scene that works best for the room being decorated.

Adding definition to a room with a wallpaper border is not a difficult task. Finding the perfect pattern for the space is often more time consuming and challenging than hanging the pre-pasted wallpaper border strips themselves. Start the search by looking at online specialty wallpaper shops to get an idea of the options available. Keep in mind that different stores, like baby supply stores and home improvement stores, may carry different brands and patterns, so going to more than one place to look for the perfect wallpaper border is a good idea.
