Get The Most Out of a Small Kitchen

planning a small kitchen

If you have a small kitchen, you will know that space is precious in such a crucial room. The kitchen is one of the busiest and most important rooms in the home, so making sure that it can cater for your needs, despite its size, is fundamental.

Efficiency is the name of the game when it comes to getting the most out of your kitchen and the more features of the room which have multiple functions, the better.

A breakfast bar is a perfect example of this and can work well in both small and large kitchens. The fact that it can be used as an area in which to prepare food as well as a place to dine makes it a real space saver if you don't have room for a large dining table. Also, many breakfast bars come with compartments for storage underneath the countertop, which can take the load off kitchen cabinets which are crammed full of pots, saucepans and food.

If you use the bar as a place to prepare food, this can create extra room elsewhere, as countertop space that would have been used to chop and dice vegetables and other food stuffs can now be used for other jobs or as extra storage space. However, although saving space is important, it is also essential that you are not in a confined space when performing intricate tasks like knife work as this can increase the chance of accidents in the kitchen.

The surface of a breakfast bar can be made out of a range of different materials and choosing the right one is important, not only to generate the look you want but also for reasons of practicality. Laminate and glass surfaces are more prone to scratching meaning they are less suitable for cutting and chopping whereas granite is more resistant.

The main problem with stone-based surfaces is their expense but, on the plus side, they are incredibly long-lasting. They will regularly need treating with a lacquer, though, as water can seep into natural surfaces. This means that laminate and glass is more favourable if you intend to eat off your breakfast bar. However, glass is prone to smudging, which could leave your kitchen having an untidy feel.

By trying to make sure that you're getting the most from each and every inch of your kitchen, whatever its size, you really will make your kitchen work better for you.
