Tips on Selecting A Memory Foam Mattress

selecting foam mattress

Much of the hype in the mattress industry these days is directed towards memory foam mattresses. If you want to be in on the craze, get one for yourself and find out just why this specific mattress type managed to overtake the fame of the predecessors in the market.

Although a relatively newbie in the consumer mattress market, memory foam is now becoming the standard in bedding, replacing latex foam and giving innerspring mattresses a run for their money. Many of the best mattresses include visco-elastic polyurethane foam, either as the main component of the mattress itself, or in the comfort layer.

Now, if you're planning to try a memory foam mattress for yourself, you'll be surprised at the wealth of options available to you. Here are some tips on how you can select the best possible memory foam mattress for you.

  • Find the right density for the right support. The most important thing you should pay attention to when choosing a memory foam mattress is the density of the foam. This determines how firm and responsive the foam is. The higher the density, the more resilient the foam is. Most top-rating memory foam mattresses have around 4 to 5 lbs. density. But do try and look for models with 5 to 6 lbs. density. If you can afford them, do get these instead. They are said to be more ideal and supportive for the human body. On the other hand, stay away from memory foam with only 2 to 3 lbs. density.

  • Breathability is important. The major complaint about memory foam mattresses is that they tend to sleep hot. The structure of the original memory foam does not allow air to go through the material. Thus, air and moisture get trapped. So when it's warm, the bed will also feel warm. When it's cold, the bed will also feel cold. Recently, however, some memory foam manufacturers have come up with open cell memory foam, which allows air to pass through the material to help regulate temperature. This will help you sleep more comfortably at night.

  • Look for warranty. Not all memory foam mattresses are the same, so don't expect them all to last for the same amount of time. To protect yourself from low standard memory foam, always buy a product that comes with a warranty period. Mattresses normally come with long warranty periods. In fact, market leader Tempurpedic offers a 20-year limited warranty on its products.

  • Read reviews. Make it a point to read consumer reviews so you will know how the memory foam mattress you are eyeing performed during actual use. Reviews can tell you a lot of things you will not find out when you check out product information provided by manufacturers. Through reviews from fellow consumers, you will find out how long the mattresses can actually be used or if the mattresses developed sags after some time. Currently, the Tempurpedic Cloud and Serta Perfect Sleeper mattresses are very popular with reviewers.

  • Look for a comfort guarantee period. Many memory foam manufacturers now offer trial periods when you purchase. This is because they are aware that not all people may be comfortable in a memory foam mattress, since it has many major differences from the innerspring mattresses, which used to be the norm. Look for brands that offer this special offer so you can be sure of what you're investing in.
