Retro Color and Shape Combinations for Creative Room Themes

Creativity is crucial if you want to express individuality and personality in any room of your home, but there are only a finite number of options available with a modern, contemporary theme. These themes are mostly restricted to the cool color palettes, and this is perfect if that is the look that you want for a particular room, but a vintage or retro color palette gives you many more options. Retro color and shape combinations for creative room themes are ideal if you want variety and a wow factor in the room, such as in the great examples listed below, in no particular order of importance.

Murals are fashionable and trendy again, especially scenes that look eco-friendly or make the room feel relaxed and peaceful. Scenes such as flowing water, growing things, living plants, animals, fantasy creatures, and panoramic views are great choices for the bedroom and playroom, regardless of the age of the retro colors person who will have primary use of the room. More abstract murals, such as geometric shapes and so on, are also very popular ways to create a focal wall in any living space.

Bright, vibrant colors are hip again. Back many years ago, the most popular and trendy shades for the home were yellows, oranges, greens, and browns, and it was considered fashion faux pas to decorate a home in cool colors or other shades. These days, the color palette leans much farther toward grays, chocolate browns, white, black, and similar colors in order to support the clean lines that make this style fashionable. In order to design something retro, use colors and shapes that are bright and cheerful, and do not be afraid to use many different colors in your theme project.

Instead of photos of family, pets, and places that mean something to you, retro color and shape combinations let you be creative in choosing a focal point. For instance, choose your favorite style of shoe, and design a wall hanging around those shoes, such as high heels, brand name tennis shoes, or a company logo. This is a unique focal point for your home, and you can easily use this as a means of breaking the ice with friends or simply showcase your sense of individuality. You can choose anything that means something to you, from fantasy creatures to articles of clothing, and do not be afraid to choose something that a little bit "off-the-wall" - no pun intended.

Be aware that outlandish designs can take away from the value of your home. The more personal your retro space becomes, the harder it will be to change later. Be careful when choosing colors or shapes that are very odd, especially if you hope to sell the home at a later date or are designing a room for a child who will quickly outgrow the theme in a year or two. It may be interesting to paint unicorns dancing across the wall of your three-year-old's bedroom, but it may not be as attractive to your teenager.
