Designing An Outdoor Living Space

Your backyard can easily become an outdoor living space, almost an extra living room or bonus room for your family to enjoy every day. Designing an outdoor living space is all about finding the accessories, furniture, and fixtures that make sense for you and your family, based on your own needs and budget. This space can be wasted, just left blank and bare, or you can add value to your home and life to your property by creating a place that your family will love.

Choosing The Basics

Decide what furniture and furnishings work best for your space, depending on how much room you have in your yard. Create a budget for the project, making sure that you are being sensible based on two specific criteria. First, how much you can realistically afford to spend. Second, taking into consideration the average cost of outdoor living furnishings. Put simply, to create a relaxing outdoor living space you will need comfortable seating arrangements, shade, and some sort of lighting. If you have a large family, make sure the seating is adequate, so that no one is constantly left without a seat. There are many different furniture ideas for outdoors, including chairs, couches, benches, tables, and much more, depending on where you shop and how much you can afford to spend.

Shade and Lighting

Shade can be the most difficult aspect of designing an outdoor living space, especially if you have little to work with naturally. There are many options for adding shade to your space, such as a great pergola, awning, or gazebo, or you can plant trees in places that add shade. Keep in mind that trees grow, and you should never plant so close to the house that the tree becomes a liability to your home instead of a great asset. While it sounds like an oxymoron to say that you have to have shade and lighting, consider the fact that you may want to enjoy your outdoor living space at different times of the day. Outdoor lighting options can be found in a variety of stores and prices. There are many lantern, torch, lamp, and light options, depending on your décor and budget.

Adding Personality

Just like inside your home, adding touches of your own personality can bring the area to life for you and your family. Accessories and accents are a great way to do this, from the color of your furniture to how you decorate the space. Paying as much attention to the details can go a long way in creating a unique look. For example, choose a lighting source that is fun, such as tiki torches in vivid colors, or utilize Hawaiian décor to bring a faraway flavor to your mainland outdoor living space. You can create a space for inviting friends and guests for fun parties and family gatherings, or simply design a relaxing area for members of the family to relax peacefully. You can be very creative in your outdoor living space, just like any other room of the house.
