When you think of organizing your home do you get heart palpations? Do your palms sweat? Do you have a hard time breathing and break out into a sweat? Take heart, you are not alone.

For some reason, thoughts of home organization bring to mind a scimitar waiting to fall on our necks, or an avalanche coming down into our path. We have these feelings for several reasons:

• We are collectors and can't bear to part with anything
• We are pack rats and can't bear to part with anything
• We are savers and can't bear to part with anything
• We are sentimentalists and can't bear to part with anything
• We might need it someday and we can't bear to through anything away
• Our possessions may be worth thousands on the Antique Roadshow someday and can't bear to part with anything
• We're saving it for our kids and we can't bear to part with anything
• We have to make decisions about what to get rid of and can't bear to part with anything

Do you see yourself here? If so, don't despair. I will eventually cover all these reasons for hanging on to stuff, and you will be able to part with some of the lodestones hanging around your neck.

I Am Not the Clutter Police

Being organized means being able to find what you need when you need it. It means relaxing and enjoying an atmosphere free of tension and strife. It means being able to accomplish a task with efficiency and with a minimum of frustration. It doesn't mean having a spotless empty home and it doesn't mean having to throw out all you possess.

It does mean being able to open a closet without having everything fall on your head. It does mean not being ashamed of having to bring unexpected guests into a living room that is just barely navigable because of the toys and newspapers littering the floor space.
