There's more to storage containers than plastic boxes

Shopping for Home Storage Containers

You now have your measurements, some ideas from magazine articles, and some thoughts on open or closed storage.

Wander through the aisles of home improvement or department stores and you will find many ideas for home storage containers. There are fixed shelves, adjustable shelves, specialty racks, bins, and plastic boxes. To avoid total confusion and massive headaches, try to shop for one storage space at a time.

If you are organizing several areas at once, keep a list of measurements and the type of item you need to store. Carry this with you and when you happen on to a container you feel will be just perfect, pull out your list and check it twice. Then when you do buy a container, you will be happy with your purchase and won't be going back to return it three times until you have the right size.

Always check the return policy and keep receipts. Sometimes even with careful measurements, that perfect home storage container may just not fit correctly or work with your decorating style.

What's Your Budget?

There are containers and home storage items for every budget. Some of the options are:

  • Custom Designed and Built

These are storage units hand built to your measurements. These are storage units custom built off site to your fit your specific space and possessions. When buying custom units, be sure you have seen other work by the craftsman you have chosen. Once built there are no refunds or returns.

  • Built-In Units

These storage systems are built in your home to your specifications. Once built they are a permanent part of your home and cannot be removed. However, they add a lot of character and charm to your home.

  • Custom Manufactured

With these units you pick and choose what you would like to have. It is like choosing a stereo system. Do you want shelves, or maybe drawers would be more convenient? Whatever your space and your needs, you get the look of custom built but with less cost.

  • Freestanding

Freestanding home storage containers are furniture that is not permanently attached. These are bookcases, wall units, desks, armories, or any other furniture that can be moved from space to space.

  • Retail

Retail home storage container units are mass produced and are available in home improvement stores, department stores, and specialty catalogs. Pieces are available in every shape and size and for most item storage. Retail systems are flexible and the most affordable storage option.

If you enjoy the yard sale process, selling your unwanted items may be a way to cover some of the cost of storage containers. If your budget is limited, work on one area at a time until you eventually finish every space you are hoping to organize.

Next Step is to Decide on Home Storage Containers

When you are thinking about how you will store and organize your possessions into home storage containers think about various types of storage containers available. Some of these are:

  • Shelves
  • Racks
  • Pegboards
  • Baskets
  • Boxes
  • Rods for hanging clothes
  • Drawers
  • Dividers

You most likely have some idea of the type of home storage container you are looking for. However, as you go up and down each aisle, you will see a wide array of products.

If you are looking for shelves, you will see fixed ones, adjustable ones, wire shelves and wooden shelves. Keep in mind the space you want to use these in, the weight and size of the items to be stored, and the style of your home. Bring your digital camera or photo phone if you are investing in a large purchase and take pictures of the shelves as they are set up in the store. Also be sure to check the measurements. What may look great in the store may totally overwhelm the room you want to set these up in.

As you shop you will most likely get some new ideas and see products you didn't even know existed. This will set your mind going on another track.

Take your time, look and shop around, and when you do purchase storage items you will be happy you've taken the time to do your homework.

Don't Stop with Home Improvement Stores

We humans love stuff, and every type of store carries storage containers of every size and shape. When thinking of storage containers check out these types of stores:

  • Garden Stores

Containers used for carrying garden tools are great for cleaning supplies

  • Fabric and Craft Stores

There is no end of containers here for every item. Many are great for holding office supplies, cosmetics, and bath items

  • Fishing Stores

Small fly fishing containers are great for sorting daily medications, tackle boxes of all sizes and shapes are great for storing various hobby supplies

  • Pottery Shops

Great mugs and bowls for pencils, potpourri, bath salts, kitchen items

  • Art Supply Stores

Many types of storage containers are available both for using inside the home and carrying items to classes and for travel.

  • Toy Stores

Toy bins may be just what you are looking for to stash boots, hats, mittens in an entry way

  • Army Surplus Stores

Footlockers and duffel bags make great long term storage containers

  • Yard and Garage Sales

Sometimes the perfect hat box, tin can, or basket will show up at a yard sale just waiting for you to pick it up. Some of my favorite and most noticed storage containers have been bought at yard sales. Most of these are one of a kind pieces that I have not seen anywhere else and that is what makes them really unique.

Don't Rush to Buy

Whatever you do, don't rush out and buy storage items just because you are in the mood today. Take your time and make sure you are satisfied with your purchase.

Be sure it is something you will like to look at and use for a long time. Is is useful? Is it pretty? Does it make you smile? Are you happy with your purchase?

If you can answer yes to some or all of these questions, go ahead, buy it, have fun. Otherwise, put it back and wait for the perfect storage idea or item to come around. It will you know, and when it does, you'll be happy you waited.
