What to do With Your Finished Basement Space

finished basement space

A finished basement is the perfect canvas for adding something that may be missing from the rest of your home's living space. There are many options for what to do with your finished basement space, depending on your needs and the needs of your family members. You can start to narrow down the choices by considering your budget and space considerations, and by talking to anyone else who lives in the home to get some input on ideas for how to best utilize this valuable area

.

Family Media Room

It can be a very fun and exciting idea to add a family media room to your home, and this great space is a good idea for couples or singles as well. You can relax together and enjoy a home theater theme, complete with curtained walls, home entertainment system, recessed lighting, and even a popcorn maker. Many retailers offer surround sound systems, and the basement acoustics are ideal for a theater-like quality and environment.

Additional Storage Capacity

Almost every family could use some additional storage, and a small basement room is a great place to store out-of-season clothing, outgrown clothing waiting to be passed to the next child, sports equipment, old photo albums, and seasonal décor and items. Keep everything in this space organized easily by adding labels to bins and making sure to label all boxes. This prevents a nightmare of chaos and clutter in this very valuable room of your home.

Children's Playroom

What parent would refuse the opportunity to have a safe space to let children play without having to force them to get it spotless by bedtime every day? A playroom in a finished basement is the perfect choice for families with small children, as it provides a safe environment for playing and creating a lifetime of memories. Use a baby monitor or set up a home office in one corner to monitor children's activities and keep everyone playing happily and safely.

Craft Room

Whether or not you have small children, it can be fun to have a space for sewing, scrap-booking, or doing other craft-based activities without having to keep the space tidy and clean at all times. Use labeled storage containers to keep supplies neat and organized, and use open bins to separate projects in progress to avoid mistakes. Utilize a long table for working, but make sure that the table has adequate space for your projects without having to stoop too low.

Home Office

Finally, a home office is a great choice for couples, singles, or work-from-home individuals, especially if the work requires a higher level of concentration and quiet in order to complete. Just be sure that you add adequate lighting to the space to avoid damage to your vision in dim light. Ergonomic chairs are another great addition to this space, to promote good posture in your home working environment. Finish with a space-appropriate desk and a method for storing documents and paperwork, such as a filing cabinet, and you have a great place for working at home every day.
