Decorating Your Student Apartment the Easy Way

If you are moving into a student apartment for the first time, chances are that this is your first home away from home. Therefore, you probably have little experience in home decorating. Add to that the pennilessness of many college students, and you may find this whole situation rather daunting at first

How do you decorate your student apartment (which for many is a one-room in halls of residence or a tiny bedsit) on a low budget? What would be good for you to know, and how can you ease this new transition for yourself?

Below are some useful tips:

  • Even though you are probably renting and you may have basic furniture, you may not have everything you need, and the little that there is might not be exactly in tiptio condition. Therefore, depending on what you need, you may have to purchase a few items for yourself, such as a bed, mattress, chair, or a small storage cupboard. Dont be afraid to buy some secondhand furniture. Always check out whatever you
  • Apart from any breaks or defects, if you buy a second-hand mattress, make sure to check first for bedbugs. You certainly don't need an infestation in your apartment.
  • Even if you don't need to paint the walls, you can still decorate them with your favorite pictures and photographs, at least around your bed to make the room more homelike and attractive. Hopefully your landlord will allow you to knock in a few extrea nails if necessary, but alwasy remember to ask permission first before you do so.
  • Treat yourself to a nice area rug. It doesn't need to be anything large or expensive. A little oval rug or flower shaped rug will be enough to add a bit of style to your new home. The luxury of putting your feet on something soft whenever you get up in the morning will be a nice start for the day.
  • If you haven't done so alread, try to aquire orderly, clean habits now that you are starting independent living. Buy a garbage bin and a small laundry basket and get used to going to bed at night without leaving dirty clothing or clutter lying around in your bedroom. This is a havit that will stand you in good stead, also when you have a family of your own.
  • Look after your school books. They are a major part of your life at university or college. The best thing to do is make sure that you have a desk that comes with a couple of shelves. This way you will always have a place to do your assignments and keep everything you need in one place.
Remember: The golden rules of student life are to try to be as neat as possible, and to do everything as economically as possible. In this way, you will be able to focus on student life much better, and hopefully you will excel in your studies.
