Cozy up Your Tiny Space

When you first set eyes on your bare, standard issue college dorm room do you think, "I am home", or do you think wistfully of your own comfortable and beautifully made up room at home? It may not seem like a big deal compared to making friends, keeping up with classes and papers, and having night outs with your new friends, but having a safe haven, a room you can call "home for now" can spell the difference between a miserable college experience and a great one.

decorating a dorm room

It does not take much effort, time or money to create a cozy little space of your own. All that's truly needed are a few simple touches; tiny details such as a bright red are rug, a cheerful, colorful wall hanging,

It is important that the main color themes of your room are ones you would love to come home to everyday. Unlike your own room at home, your dorm's color and style theme cannot depend on the wall's color or the furniture. Instead, it must be made up of necessary accessories such as your bedcovers, a lamp to reflect your own style and personality and a good rug to match or complement the color of your bedcover. The cozy touch of a plush, soft rug on the floor, be it on wood flooring, tile flooring or even the flat, non-plush carpet kind of floor, is especially important in the colder season when you could end up having to spend far too many hours locked indoors.

Most people think that floors, as long as they are presentable, practical and comfortable to walk in, do not need much sprucing up for visual appeal. This is far from true. In fact, when a person enters a room their eyes take in the floor area first; then the furniture at waist level and then they move upwards along the walls.

Unfortunately, no matter how drab and unappealing your dorm room flooring may be, most dorm room residents will typically have neither the money nor the authority to install smooth cherry wood floors. This is where some innovative floor covering can be used to add the final touch to complete the visual symmetry of the room. Even if the bedcover is red or an interesting print and your lamp glows a warm orange with red tassels on the shades, it is not a perfect symmetry yet. A perfect symmetry comes in threes and works in a triangle, taking the eye from one side to the other and back again. What completes the red bedcover and the red-tasseled lamp then, could be a carefully chosen, warm orange colored flokati rug or red area rug or perhaps a flower shaped rug with specks of red, orange and yellow.
