Decorating with Dots for Kids and Tots

Decorating children's rooms can be a fun process that offers a multitude of possibilities. From simple and plain decors to rooms decorated to reflect a decorating for kids favorite hobby, the whimsical and creative ideas for children's room decorating abounds. One of the most appealing and versatile decorating designs is that of the dot. Dots of all sizes and shapes can transform a room from drab and dull to bright and cheerful in no time flat. Try some of the fun ideas below for decorating with dots for kids and tots.

Dots On the Wall

Use bright, bold colors for the dots if the look of the room is to be modern and sassy. Bright oranges and fuchsias are great for the young girl who is into fashion and flair. Fire engine red and stark white dots would work well in a room for a boy who loves cars or baseball. Subtle, muted dots offer the opposite effect and can create a calm, peaceful feel to a room. A yellow room with yellow dots that are a few shades lighter in color is pleasing to look at, but not overpowering. In a nursery or the bedroom of a child who has trouble settling down at night, a more subtle dot approach would work best.

Dots On the Floor

Throw rugs in the shape of dots can be found in most large home decor shops, as well as through online retailers. Although not specifically for children's rooms, these rugs are perfect for drawing the eye from the wall and down to the floor. They offer color and texture while creating unity of pattern. If dot rugs cannot be readily found, make them from carpet remnants. Cut out a large circle template, and trace it on the back of a piece of carpeting. Place the piece of carpeting on a piece of thick cardboard and cut the circle out using a sharp carpet cutting tool. Be careful when cutting, as carpeting is notoriously difficult to cut.

Accessorize with Dots

Dot accessories are relatively easy to find. Look for or make painted letters covered with polka dots to spell out the child's name and hang them on the wall. Dot theme trash cans, switch plates, lampshades and more are all available. Curtains are also a great place to start when looking for accessories or dot inspiration. If using common colors, finding dot curtains that coordinate with the dots already in the room should be simple. However, if no color coordination is possible, create your own dot curtains by purchasing solid curtain panels and randomly sewing on felt dots of different sizes in the needed colors. With a bit of creative shopping, there are endless possibilities for dot decor accessories.

Some people find that they glean inspiration from the accessories first and then decorate the rest of the room. Work from walls to accessories to floor or from whichever point provides the most resources and inspiration. Dots are readily available in a multitude of colors and sizes. Decorating with dots for kids and tots is a decor that can carry them from infancy through the teenage years if done in age appropriate colors.
