Creating A Relaxing Guest Bedroom

We tend to focus all of our creative energies on designing an environment that is relaxing and peaceful in the master bedroom, but few fail to see the importance of directing some of that energy into the guest bedroom as well. Whether you have frequent overnight guests or just the occasional occupant for your guest bedroom, the room should still be relaxing and peaceful for whoever needs it.

Creating a relaxing guest bedroom does not mean that you have to essentially design a second master suite, just follow some basic advice. Guests will appreciate the fact that you take the time to ensure that comfort is addressed in all of these aspects.

Your guest will want sleeping arrangements that are clean and comfortable.

One of the biggest issues when you create a relaxing guest bedroom is to ensure that your guest can, in fact, relax. Whether you choose a foldout sofa, futon, or a real bed, make sure that it is comfy and that the sheets, blanket, and pillow are kept clean. This is especially important if there are pets in the home. No one wants to sleep on a bed covered in cat or dog hair or smelling of pets!

Add personal touches to make the room feel more comfortable.

Find a decorating style that works for your guest bedroom. You do not have to choose a neutral or white bedroom in order to appeal to every guest; the trick is keeping it simple but functional while adding things that make it feel like home. You can use the same decorating styles as you would for any other room, just keep accessories somewhat gender neutral so that the room will be appealing no matter who is staying over.

Do not forget to add things that the guest needs, such as lighting.

Your guest may want to retire to the guest bedroom before everyone is ready to go to sleep each night. Make sure that there is adequate lighting for unwinding, such as an overhead light fixture, table lamp, or wall sconce. Dim lights are fine for this time of day, but additional lighting will be required in the morning.

Guests need storage too.

Your guest will need simple storage solutions for small items, such as toiletries, that he or she does not want to carry around. If you anticipate long-term guests, make sure that there is adequate space for clothing and shoes, but short-term guests really only need room for hanging up dress clothes and some space for personal items. Keep it simple and functional by using multi-purpose items, such as closet organizers.

Do not overlook scent.

One of the most relaxing things about a great guest bedroom is how it smells. If the room smells like pet waste or cigarette smoke, it will not be relaxing to people who are not used to these smells. Candles, room deodorizers, scented oils, and similar items can create a relaxing environment just as well as the comfiest pillow.
