The color green is calm and relaxing

Learn how to introduce this versatile color into your color scheme

country living room green color scheme

The color green is one of the most versatile colors of the rainbow. You have only to look out your window and take your cue from nature for inspiration on how to use this magnificent color.

Green is the dominant color in most landscapes. This glorious color from it's soft delicate tints to it's deepest richest darks is the most restful and soothing of all the colors in the color wheel. You could easily pick out an entire color scheme for one room using just the greens you see from your front yard.

Muted shades of green such as olive, moss, and sage are more at home in relaxed country decor homes. The darker, richer shades of forest green and bottle green are traditionally used in more formal style homes.

Below are some ideas for color schemes:

Complementary

The complementary color scheme is made of two colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel.

The complementary color for the color green is red. As you can see in the photo above, an even balance of a shade of green and red with the addition of white makes a great color scheme.

Sage green, terra cotta, and a grayed white make a great restful complementary color scheme that doesn't remind you of Christmas trees.

Green and magenta are complementary on the Ives color wheel and go beautifully together.

Deep green, off-white and rose pink make up a great traditional color scheme.

Split Complementary

The split complementary scheme uses a color and the two colors adjacent to its complementary. For the color green these colors would be green, yellow and blue (yellow and blue being the 2 colors on each side of red which is the complementary color)

Forest green, federal blue and some gold accessories is sumptuous in traditional decorating schemes. This combo is a favorite in opulent dining rooms.

Olive green and white with a small touch of blue and yellow accessories creates a restful bath area.

Triadic Color Scheme

The triadic color scheme uses three colors equally spaced around the color wheel. The triadic scheme is more balanced and harmonious than the split complementary.

Green, orange and purple would be a triadic color scheme. Choose one color to be used in larger amounts than others. If you find the colors are overpowering, used subdued tones to create a pleasing color scheme using triads.

Analogous Color Scheme

The analogous color scheme uses colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. Avoid combining warm and cool colors in this scheme.

By using the color green and its closest neighbors you can create a harmonious analogous color scheme. Usually analogous schemes use three, five or seven neighboring colors. Avoid using too many hues in the analogous scheme, because this may ruin the harmony.

Ives Color Wheel

An example of the color scheme would be green, blue-green, aqua green, aqua-blue and turquoise blue. Going in the other direction green,spring-green, yellow-green, chartreuse, and yellow would be an analogous color scheme. Of course this progression would be used if you were using this Ives color wheel. However, if you were using a different color wheel the progression would be the same but you would have different shades of color.

The color green and Feng shui

In the Oriental tradition, green is a significant color. It represents hope, vitality and long life. It symbolizes harmony, freshness, and fertility. It stands for all plant life that is continually growing and expanding.

Putting bamboo plants in the eastern area of your home will bring prosperity and abundance. Jade statues placed in this area will promote good luck and prosperity. Burning green candles in the eastern section of your home will also add energy to the abundance process.

The healing properties of the color green

Green has great healing power. It balances the emotions and brings about a feeling of calmness. It is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance. Aqua is associated with emotional healing and protection.

Green is a good general healing color because it stimulates growth therefore it is good for helping heal broken bones - regrowth of tissue of all kinds.

Whatever shade you choose, green is wonderfully relaxing
