Choosing Accessories For The Bathroom

Many people forget about the bathroom when they are accessorizing the rooms in their home, not realizing that the bathroom can be just as much fun to decorate as the other living spaces. There are many décor options and styles that work in the bathroom, and choosing accessories for the bathroom does not have to be limited to things that belong in the bathroom. You have creative license to be imaginative, and find inspiration from a wide variety of sources.

Themed Bathroom

Themed rooms are very popular as a decorating style these days, and the bathroom is no exception to the trend. There are a wide variety of themes that work in the bathroom without looking tacky or out of place, from traditional beach themes to more modern and sophisticated looks. It depends on your personal taste, and what you want to see in a room that you and your family will be using frequently. For instance, you can create a very masculine bathroom for a bachelor pad by using a movie theme in the bathroom. You can frame movie posters, add a dressing room vanity with a sink, choose a low profile toilet in a fun black as a “seat,” and so on, to create your movie theme and make it work. Stock a magazine rack next to the toilet with movie-themed magazines, or magazines about famous people, to complete the look.

Adding Color

Bathrooms do not have to be neutral colors these days, nor do they have to be white, sterile spaces in order to be stylish and contemporary. A modern bathroom can incorporate all sorts of color splashes in various places without looking cheap or outdated. While you may not want to borrow your grandmother’s floral-patterned shower curtain, you can be very creative with colors in the bathroom. You can choose to paint the bathroom in a great neutral or white as a base color, then add fun color splashes with a shower curtain, bathing accessories, toiletry hardware, lighting fixtures, and similar areas. For instance, you can use black and white subway tiles for the walls and floor, then use a red shower curtain, toothbrush caddy, hand soap dispenser, towel rack, and/or medicine cabinet to add color to the room.

Common Accessories

Obviously, there are some accessories that work better than others in the bathroom. For instance, most bathrooms have some sort of storage for unmentionables, from cleaners to toilet paper. Most offer another storage area for items that you use everyday but do not want to leave sitting around, such as toothpaste, shaving gear, and other toiletries. If the bathroom will be a guest bathroom, be sure and leave some storage space for guests who will be bringing their own toiletries. Accessorize in ways that make sense to you based on your needs and wants, instead of sticking to the traditional and feeling boxed into a décor that does not meet your sense of style. Choosing accessories for the bathroom should be just as much fun as choosing the décor for the other rooms in your home, and is a great chance to express your creativity and personality.
