From My Desktop

Hello to all you faithful readers and visitors,

Yes, I'm late this month and I know it. It has been a long cold winter and even now we have snow still in the wooded areas around the house. We received over one hundred inches of snow and I am so done with snow and cold!

Because of this, when the sun is out and the days are nice and warm, I am out of the house. After the forced hibernation of this winter, I have a real need to get outside.

In order to get through this winter and stay sane, I took up watercolor painting. My children gave me a new digital camera for Christmas, and I am outside playing with my new toy every chance I get. As you know one thing leads to another and because of these events, I am also learning to use Photo shop and this will lead to new and improved photos on my website.

So all in all, every cloud has a silver lining. I'm having great fun with my new activities and am looking forward to enjoying some great weather and outdoor activities here in Maine.

If any of you find yourselves down or in a funk, look for a new activity or hobby. It's a great way to pick yourself up, move on, and look at life with a new outlook.

Your Friendly Neighborhood (even if I am half way around the world!) Home Dec Lady,
Gloria

The Creative Workshop
If Walls Could Talk

You've all heard the expression, "If These Walls Could Only Talk". If this were so, what would the walls of your home have to say about the state of your home and your home life?

One day when you have some time, take a cup of coffee, pick a room, and sit there and think about what the walls of this room see. Do they see a room that is well cared for? Is there room for improvement or re-decorating? What type of living goes on in this room?

Would you be happy with the conversation the walls would have with visitors or other family members? Would they see a room that is cozy, friendly and well used? Maybe the room is stiff and cold and no living or family activities are connected with that particular room. If this is the case, what would you change to make this room more user friendly and family oriented?

Maybe more comfortable furniture or a more cozy furniture arrangement would help. Perhaps all the room needs is a little color to bring it to new life. Is the lighting stopping you from using the room as much as you'd like? Perhaps a few well placed lamps would make a difference in how you use the room.

It could be that the room has outgrown it's original usefulness. Once the children have left home, do you entertain enough to keep a dining room that is used only at holidays? Perhaps you could rearrange the room to do double duty by setting up a screened off area for reading, sewing, etc. Look at the activities conducted in various rooms. Is it time for a change?

Take time to talk to your walls about what they see in your everyday living. Doing this simple exercise may change the way you see your home and inspire you to make some changes to improve the usefulness of your home.

Creative Dozen - Could Your Bathroom Use an Update?

Listed below are some quick and inexpensive ways to update and improve your bath.

1. Tired of the same old bathroom walls? Try sponge painting or textured paint. Most bathrooms are small so this project shouldn't take long or be too expensive. If you don't like the results, just repaint.

2. Sick of looking at your vinyl flooring? Paint it! Make sure to prime it first with a specialty primer and then consider creating a black and white marble tile pattern or using stencils for a border. Follow with four to six coats of polyurethane for water resistance.

3. A new twist on tradition, Adhesive Film, White Flowers & Lace, is inspired by the traditional lace-making of Derbyshire based Cluny lace, manufacturers of traditional leavers lace since 1845. The low-fuss window dressing attaches to the window's interior where it lets in natural light but obscures the view. All designs are multi-directional so you can place the film horizontally or vertically. This can be purchased at 2Jane

4. Along this same line, a plastic adhesive film can be purchased a Lowe's or Home Depot and cut to fit small awkward bathroom windows. This comes in various patterns such as grapes, stained glass, flowers etc. You can also check this out online at Wallpaper for Windows

5. Tired of the plain tiles in your bathroom but think they can't be changed without great expense? Think again. Give your kitchen or bathroom a stylish makeover with these Tile Tattoos by Mibo. Impervious to water and moisture, these heavy duty stickers will add life to the wettest walls of the house. Completely opaque coverage hides any unwanted tiles. No glue required for application and no sticky residue if they're removed! These can also be purchased from 2Jane

6. When was the last time you noticed your lighting? How about your ceiling fixture? Check out the lighting at your local home improvement stores. If you haven't looked at lighting for a while, it may be time for an update.

7. Consider changing the hardware on your cabinets for a new and updated look. Just changing the knobs can add a whole new look and even inspire you towards other ideas.

8. Are your counters full of personal items and cosmetics strewn all over the place? Look for a set of matching glass, pottery, or ceramic storage containers and reorganize your counter space.

9. Spice racks and silverware dividers can also be used in the bathroom cabinets for organizing small items.

10. Changing your towel bars and toilet paper holder is a simple and inexpensive way to update your bathroom.

11. For a new touch of color, change your tub and shower mats along with adding a new shower curtain.

12. For decorative accent that can also add more privacy to the bathroom, consider installing interior shutters that match your decor.

Hopefully, these tips will inspire you to update your bath for spring and give you some inspiration that will lead to other creative ideas.
